LOCALmotion – Jozelle Smith

Well, we are the “Heart of Screenland,” aren’t we? The Culver City Education Foundation is proudly reporting Sony Pictures Entertainment’s gift of $25,000 to the CCUSD’s four-year old “Front and Center Theatre Collaborative” program, which will benefit every child in the District. Add to this the Fineshriber Family Foundation’s new $5,000 gift (they already are responsible for the creation of the Science Discovery Lab at El Rincon, the addition of the Symphonic Jazz Orchestra program to second and third graders and the GrowingGreat nutrition program to all elementary schools) and theatre arts education in our schools is booming. Now the 24th Street Theatre is bringing its workshop/field trip program “Enter Stage Right” to all 5th grade students in each of our five elementary schools, with in-class theatre workshops and field trips to the theatre where students apply the skills learned in the classroom to a performance with professional artists, live musicians and technical personnel. (Why didn’t we have this when we were in 5th grade? she moans dramatically.)

Can it really be almost November? Just around the corner is next weekend’s 10K Casino Night, hosted by the Culver City Rotary Club. That’s Saturday, November 3 from 7:00 p.m. – 11:00 p.m. at the Culver City Senior Citizens’ Center, 4095 Overland Avenue. (And no, Virginia, it doesn’t mean you’re old if you go to a Casino Night at the Senior Center) Admission is $25.00 and proceeds will benefit the Rotary Club’s many local charities. You can play poker, craps and blackjack, enjoy hearty hors d’oeuvres, a silent auction and a no-host bar PLUS the Rotary Club’s famous Opportunity Drawing with a $10,000 grand prize – the last (250th) ticket drawn!
Now you can really start marking your November calendars: the next Ballona Creek Renaissance creek cleanup will be based at Centinela Avenue – Saturday, November 10 from 9:00 a.m. – noon. More information on this next week. Also coming up is the Culver City Friends of the Library’s Holiday Arts/Craft Fair/Used Book Sale – just in time for gift-giving – on November 17 from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. at the Library.
But October’s far from over: this Tuesday, October 23 – the Culver-Palms Family YMCA is kicking off its 2013 Current Support Campaign at Rush Street from 6-8 p.m. There are six campaign teams who will be reaching out to the community for pledges of funds to provide financial assistance to kids of all ages and families who would otherwise be unable to participate in the Y’s great sports, swimming and fitness programs. They’ll wrap up the campaign by December 12, 2012, knowing that the community recognizes the Y’s commitment to “… youth development, healthy living and social responsibility.”
Also this Tuesday the Rotary Club of Culver City will be recognized by the CCUSD’s Board of Education at its 7:00 p.m. meeting. The Club participated in the acquisition of a new computer lab at El Rincon Elementary School. By partnering with the Culver City Education Foundation, Australian Rotary and Rotary International they were able to purchase 26 Apple IMac computers and 26 Officejet printers plus equipment (a total of $33,511.43). Go, Rotary!
