LOCALmotion – Jozelle Smith

What a great idea – a “Night Out” for mothers! Downtown Culver City’s May “Third Wednesday” (this Wednesday, May 16) is dedicated to moms, and there’s a lot happening to keep that Mother’s Day spirit going: special prices on facials, massages, yoga sessions, 10% off all gift items at Lundeen’s, moms and their guests can enjoy half-off bottles of wine at Tender Greens and Akasha, half-off champagne cocktails at the Culver Hotel, $5.00 Skinny Margaritas at Ford’s Filling Station, buy-one-get-one-free beer at Libra, all you can drink mimosas for $10 at K-ZO, $8.00 Mom’s Day Martinis at Rush Street, dessert and organic wine samples on the patio at Native Foods – and the list goes on. From 5:00 pm – 9:00 pm this Wednesday, take Mom and pals and enjoy! Carpooling is encouraged, (as is designated driver status!) with valet parking available at several locations, and two hours free parking in the Watseka, Cardiff and (preferred) Ince structures.
Former Culver City resident Lori Escalera will be returning for her fourth year at the Sicilian Festival May 20, 2012 – Little Italy, San Diego. Lori began her chalk art street painting in 1994 and has traveled to China, Mexico and street painted throughout the USA. As Lori says, “… unlike a painting on canvas, which can only be owned by one…Street Art can be owned and shared by everyone!” Lori has been street painting in Little Italy every October at the Annual Festa since 2000. For More information on The Sicilian Festival Event visit www.sicilianfesta.com/ It’s worth a trip to San Diego – her art is amazing!

Wow – the Culver City Great Parks Association is taking the Gary Edmund Carter Collection on community tour and the first stop was last Monday night at City Council. Why is this significant? Because National Baseball Hall of Fame member Gary Carter was born in Culver City on April 8, 1954, that’s why. Are we proud, or what?

Not only has the Culver City CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) assembled more than a dozen members to participate in the American Cancer Society’s “Relay-for-Life” 24-hour walkathon this Saturday, May 19 from 9:00 am to Sunday, May 20 at 9:00 a.m. at Culver City High School, but they’ll also be staffing the event’s First Aid Booth They’re rounding up EMTs, Nurses, and Doctors with their own liability insurance to staff the booth plus recruiting additional CERT Members to assist.
What a great turnout of cars (more than 400), not to mention the huge crowds of people at last Saturday’s “Cruisin’ Back to the 50’s” Car Show, staged by the Exchange Club of Culver City. The colorful display of vehicles (…almost as colorful as their owners) was outstanding, the music was great and food opportunities were abundant – after all, it did take place in Downtown Culver City! Congratulations to the Club on its ninth successful Car Show, to George Barris, and the sponsors (plus the Culver City Fire Department Station #1’s Pancake Breakfast and open house – always a huge hit).
