Culver City is a Nice Place for LUNCH – by Mary McGrath

You might think of it as a noun or a verb, but you can also think of it as a destination. If you’re not familiar with this restaurant in Culver City, it’s one of the more recent arrivals on Main St. where the hardware store used to be. And for that meal in the middle of the day, it’s a sweet spot.

It’s a cute concept, fusing a bit of a DIY sandwich/salad deal, along with some proven creations that are innovative without being too experimental.

LUNCH is owned by Michelle Nigro, who was schooled in Arizona, and Michelle brings a wealth of experience to her first restaurant venture. There’s nothing haphazard here. Décor is light and airy, with a homey touch that permeates the menu offerings, and even the descriptions of many of the items that are available.

Salvatore Celona is comfortable behind the scenes in the kitchen, having studied under Todd English. His expertise shows. I tried quite a few of their offerings, and I was impressed.

First of all, LUNCH has probably the best cole slaw I’ve ever tasted. Unlike that mayo-ridden slop that’s usually served in most places, this slaw was crunchy, with just a hint of dressing to spice it up. I could have eaten a bowl of this alone.

Sandwiches are dense and layered with a number of ingredients. They don’t skimp at LUNCH. If you like turkey, go for the Newton, with turkey, gorgonzola, bacon, greens, and fig spread on multi-grain bread. Or simply create one of your own.

Salads are wonderful as well. I loved their Tombstone, a real southwestern gem. The Russian Mod Cobb was also good, dense with ham, cheeses, turkey, egg and avocado, drizzled with a light Russian dressing. Don’t like anything on the menu? You can simply create your own salad. How cool is that?

And don’t forget the cookies. In particular, I loved the oatmeal and their chocolate mint, and I don’t even have much of a sweet tooth!

Good things are happening at night also. How about sandwich pairing with wine or beer? Live music is available as well.

I commend anyone who undertakes a restaurant venture, but with Michelle’s effervescent personality, I’m sure this one will be a winner. I’m a fan.
